Brief Description of Research ProjectGoal: further develop the technology for using miniature accelerometers, high-speed video camera, and imbedded pressure cells to evaluate changes in track behavior at open track sites and bridge transition zones. The overall objectives are 1) to develop bridge transition designs to minimize transient differential movement within the transition zone, and 2) to determine pressure magnitudes and distributions at the tie-ballast interface.
1. Use accelerometers and video to evaluate track deflection and movement at bridge approaches
exhibiting adequate and poor performances. 2. Imbed pressure cells within the track structure to ascertain pressure distributions at open-track sites and along the transitions to bridges. 3. Evaluate the trackbed designs and conditions relative to effects on performance of the open-track sites and bridge transitions. 4. Evaluate results and present to AREMA Committees 1 and 5 for consideration as inclusion in the section on Trackbed Structural Design.
