Brief Description of Research ProjectThis course provides an introduction to transportation risk management, and risk assessment concepts and methodologies to address the safety and security of freight transport by railways, roads, waterways and pipelines. Students learn about the methodologies needed to perform comprehensive mode-specific and multimodal transportation risk analyses. Particular attention will be focused on understanding the key safety and risk challenges for each transportation mode. In addition to understanding the technical elements of the course material, an important objective of the course will be development of students' ability to review and critically analyze scientific and engineering literature pertinent to the subject and use the dialectic to develop and sharpen their skills in evaluating these works and synthesize the information. Students will participate in a bi-weekly class meeting in which they will work in teams and engage in a structured critical evaluation of academic journal articles pertaining to transportation safety and risk. These critical evaluations will employ the dialectic approach to formally consider works in terms of their experimental, analytical and logical rigor and evaluate the process used to develop and support the conclusions. Students will also participate in a class project to perform an actual route-specific transportation risk analysis in which they will review the literature, synthesize the information, perform GIS spatial and statistical analyses and make a presentation on the subject. Each student is also expected to work on an individual transportation safety problem of his/her interest, as a major final project to identify, assess and mitigate the risk in the most effective, feasible manner.
